Hotdots.gif (1078 bytes) Changing the picture on   your desktop Hotdots.gif (1078 bytes)

THE picture you see on your computer screen  is referred to by techies as "wallpaper".  So, here is where you are going to learn to hang some new wallpaper up onto your computer screen (desktop). Windows -- all  of their versions and permutations -- provides you with many types of papers you can use.  Most of what is provided are small designs that get repeated over and over right next to each other (tiled)  so that they appear to form a continuous background.  here you will see several  examples:

Black Thatch.bmp (182 bytes)     the image itself
image tiled as background
Blue Rivets.bmp (194 bytes)   the image itself
the image tiled as background
the image itself     Carved Stone.bmp (582 bytes)

the image tiled as a background

Well I think you  get the idea.....  In addition Windows has given you  several larger pictures that you can use to  decorate your desktop.  Most of us have seen the clouds on our desktops.  but there are other pictures there too.  And you can use any picture you want that is saved in a bitmap (.bmp) format.  For those of us using Windows '98  or later versions, it can be nearly any picture.first here is how to put a tiled background on your desktop:   Right click on your desktop anywhere  there is no icon. This will bring up a menu that looks like this:

display_prop_bck.gif (40338 bytes)
Here you will see a series of tabs at the top.  Select the one that says "Background". There will be a picture of a computer monitor in the center of this tab.  The picture you see there should be the picture that is currently displayed on your desktop.  in the window pane near the bottom are the available selections for you to make the pattern or the picture on your desktop.  As you select each, the picture will change illustrating what it will look like as your desktop.  If you left click on the "Browse" button all of your folders will be availablefrom which you can choose the   picture or pattern.
If you want the picture to go all the way across your screen, select "stretch" .  If the picture is just fine centered on your screen then select "center".  If you  prefer the repeating pattern like you see here as the background, then choose "tile".   Play around with it ... enjoy it... it should be fun!
Eventually you will be able to  put your dog's picture, your kids, your boss... well let's not get too crazy....  your car or the car you want to have -- nearly anything you can photograph ,scan or capture from the web.  Later we'll cover how you get those images onto your computer. for now have fun with those you have.
